"Throughout the textbook we have tried as far as possible to avoid the use of technical language. For example, the term "fall group" is used instead of "thesis" and "rise group" instead of "arsis." Even in treating the nature of a Latin word the term "rise" is sometimes adopted for the accented syllable and "fall" for the grave syllable of a word. The translations of the Greek and Latin names for the neumes are supplied as a teaching aid since the picture conjured up by the English word is more graphic than the foreign term, especially in the teaching of younger students." This family album chronicles the life of Elvis Presley in rare and intimate photographs, many of them never published before. Here is the King on the day he joined RCA Records, in a tense moment backstage before appearing on THe Ed Sullivan Show, and flirting with Ann-Margret on the set of his debut movie Love Me Tender. Pictures of his youth capture his life at home, at the piano with his parents, playing with the family dog, and posing with his high school prom date. Later photographs reveal the years at Graceland, with Priscilla and their daughter, Lisa Marie. And throughout are images of Elvis with famous friends and admirers, from B. B. King to Johnny Cash, Liberace to Richard Nixon. ISBN: 9780316003506 Item #1307

A beautiful hand lettered presentation inscription in Polish on the half-title page signed by dr. M. Sierocka and dr. A. Borchardt.
"Karol Szymanowski: the greatest after Chopin". This is how he is referred to in his native Poland. And this description covers everything: his exceptional position in the history of music; the fact that like his great predecessor he lifted Polish music from a national backwater into the mainstream of contemporary Europe; the Polishness of his music, which while universalist was also based on the folklore of his native land; and finally, his ability, despite the original and inimitable nature of his music, to follow the splendid inspiration which Chopin represented for him. Warmly inscribed, "to the incomparable Lowell Greer in highest admiration from Phil Farkas" Tall 8vo. 9-5/16 x 6-1/4". Blue cloth covered boards stamped in gold. Fine book / In fine dust jacket.
In Philip Farkas we find one of the most articulate and much published musicians and teachers of our time. His articulate explanations of music and the special challenges of horn playing and documented in 3 books and many articles, only a few of which are reprinted or excerpted in the third chapter of this book. The opening chapter is all Phil's; his recollection, successes, fears, and wit all combine to give a candid and entertaining look at how he feels he grew into what he became. Those who know Phil may recognize some of his stories, from the poker game in a disconnected railroad car to depositing Erich Leinsdorf at a draft induction center with a copy of Emanuel Kant's On Pure Reason and a Homburg hat. He doesn't include the story of the perfect concert in Boston with Reiner, but another contributor does. With Phil there are just too many great tales to expect him to include them all in a short book. Item #956
