" This is a story of the Eastern way of life. It has been my privilege to personally know the wonderful old Hindu teacher whom I call The Guru. Some of the things he says in this story were actually said to me. The character for whom I have devised the name Nadu is also a real person; it was through him that I met The Guru. Nadu himself told me the story of his life and how he became the disciple of the venerable teacher. Some parts of my story are built from incidents in the lives of older disciples, so blended as to create a narrative typical of the life of Eastern discipline. Names and places have been changed, in deference to Oriental mysticism, which does not give prominence to the experiences of persons. When a man undertakes the holy life, he chooses the way of simplicity and humility, performing good works but desiring no credit for himself."
