The human hero of this story is an old and humble Zulu parson, from the hills above Ixopo, who sets out for Johannesburg, "the city of evil," in search of his only son. He goes with apprehension, fearing the worst, for he has had no word from the son since he left many months before, and he knows that the road to Johannesburg has led to corruption, crime and destruction for many a native youth.
