Mr. Waugh's writing may be compared with a dive-bomber; he circles over his target, flashing in the rarefied atmosphere of wit and extravagant fancy, then suddenly swoops earthward and discharges a devastating load of explosive. There is much sober criticism of life behind his gaiety and invention.
