William Shakespeare

New York: Oxford University Press, 1975. Tall 4to. 14-1/8" x 10-5/16". Dark gray cloth covered boards. Spine stamped in gold. 273 pp. Decorated pictorial endpapers. Book is in fine condition. / Jacket has two one inch tears at top edge. Overall, sturdy and very good.

Schoenbaum literally traversed half the earth to gather and photograph documents, numbering over 200, including parish register entries of Shakespeare's christening and burial, his marriage license bond, and his will with his bequest to his wife (affectionate or derisory) of a second best bed - and les well known items such as the little volume which a Colonel Richard Grace received from Shakespeare's daughter, Susanna - conceivably this book once belonged in Shakespeare's library. There is even a purported sketch of Anne Hathaway that appeared in a copy of the Shakespeare Third Folio. These facsimiles, the most complete collection ever assembled, are unequaled anywhere for their clarity of reproduction.

Around the illustrations, Schoenbaum weaves an elegant text; so thorough is it that it forms a fine Shakespeare biography in itself.
