A thoroughly delightful story of an orphaned country girl in Norway who makes her way in the world tending goats in the mountains for her gentle benefactor. The scenes of the countryside and the relationships of the animals with each other and with their herders are so refreshing. It is a life few children growing up in the 21st century would have any knowledge of but for this story written by a native of Norway in 1903.

A perfect family read-aloud book.
