Dr. Hewlett, an archaeologist, with his niece, who is nicknamed Jimmy, Tom Hinsdale, his assistant, a Carib Indian servant, and a Negro, Sam, go to a small uninhabited West Indian island known as Bloody Gut Cay. According to local tradition there is a pirate treasure on the island, and during the voyage the scientist passes the time by telling stories of the old pirates and buccaneers. Landing on the Cay the party selects a camp site near some caves wherein Dr. Hewlett feels they may find remains of the long-vanished aborigines.
The story continues with their numerous adventures on the island, gradually developing into an exciting climax. There are several battles with native raiders who claim that Dr. Hewlett has discovered the legendary treasure. Jimmy is kidnapped and held for ransom. Finally, when Jimmy has been rescued, and the party are digging a grave for one of the raiders killed in a running fight, the treasure is discovered. But Jimmy and her friends have to defend it during a night attack on their sloop before they can escape from Bloody Gut Cay.
This appealing book for all boys and girls in their teens contains, in passing, much useful and accurate information concerning the birds, plants, reptiles, and marine life of the Caribbean. And, if you have read any of Mr. Verrill's other stories of adventure, you need not be reminded of his ability to present an absorbing and exciting tale.
