Raised gold tooled bands with decorative blind tooled panels. This original binding has been expertly repaired at the joints creating sturdy sound hinges and joints. Original marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Both volumes are in very good condition. Pages are clean and crisp. But, the margins of many of the engravings show some foxing. (See photo).

Vol. I has a dramatic frontispiece opposite the title page and contains 15 pp. of "Orders Received for the Life of Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, K.B. Previous to its Publication". Names of all customers for the book are listed and the dates of order. Following are pp. i - xlv, The Table of Contents for both Vol. I and Vol. II and the Explanation of Engravings for both volumes. Then begins the story of Lord Nelson's life with a handsome engraving of him in uniform and a charming engraving of the Parsonage House of Burnham Thorpe. The narrative continues for 359 pp. followed by the Appendix from p 361 thru 375 with genealogy and other interesting material. Vol. II has its own pagination with the narrative continuing from p. 1 through p 470. P. 471 to 511 being the Appendix. Overall a tight, clean very good copy.

From the Introduction: "As an instinctively religious being, man is constitutionally concerned in the sublime science which, more perhaps than any other department of physics, has enabled him to look "through nature up to nature's God." If "an undevout astronomer is mad," the converse is at least measurably true: unastronomic piety is mad. For if science without devotion be defective, because the spiritual is the necessary inspiration of the material, devotion without science is also defective, because the material is the necessary embodiment of the spiritual. Head and foot of spine somewhat rubbed. Front and back fly-leaves foxed. One signature beginning to loosen slightly but overall binding is tight and book is very good.

Written for the ministers and members of the Methodist Episcopal Church: "The life of a missionary, in a wild and uncultivated field, is far from being monotonous. He is constantly brought into contact with extremes. His life is often a checkered scene not all made up of thorns, not all of clouds and storms. The cheerful sunlight often breaks in upon his path. Hardship itself imparts a power of endurance not a gift of nature, enabling its possessor to frown down formidable obstacles. It is often the lot of missionaries to wade through the deepest trials and experience the greatest consolations. The sketches given in the following narrative, it is hoped, may not prove entirely uninteresting to the indulgent reader.
