Never since the Morisot memorial exhibition of 1896 had so many of her works been gathered together. Morisot was the hostess of a leading salon, and her life and career were intertwined with the great French flowering of arts and letters of the late nineteenth century. Such figures as Stephane Mallarme, Paul Verlaine, Gioacchino Rossini, the Goncourts, and Emile Zola play significant roles in her story.
