Steffanson's experiences as he lived among the Mackenzie Eskimos in 1908, finding them cheerful, self-reliant and admirable companions. "They are people among whom you might possibly have enemies and among whom you were certain to make friends; people very much like you and me, but with the social virtues developed rather more highly than they have been among our own race. In a difficult struggle for existence under hard natural conditions they have acquired the ability to live together in peace and good will."
