Market Day for Ti Andre is more than a story full of comedy and adventure. It is an authentic and vivid picture of the life and customs of a unique West Indian island community. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Maia Rodman was the wife of Selden Rodman, who was director of the now famous mural paintings in the Cathedral St. Trinite in Port-au-Prince. During their two years of residence in Haiti, she made the penetrating study of customs and ways of living that forms the basis of her story. She persuaded Wilson Bigaud to make illustrations for the book after he had complete his mural, "The Marriage at Cana," in the cathedral. His droll, childlike drawings are the perfect complement for Mrs. Rodman's delightful writing.
