A Boat for Peppe

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1950. Leo Politi. First edition with Scribner's A on title page. Unpaginated small 4to. bound in blue cloth. The story tells how Peppe's father, a Sicilian-American fisherman, goes out with the boars and is almost lost at sea, and of Peppe's faith that he will return. Together he and his father prepare for the festival of the Blessing of the Boats, in which the whole family takes part. Through his old fisherman friend, Geramia, Peppe finally gets his wish. As in all Leo Politi's picture books, there is true understanding of children and a warm feeling of family life. The setting of this book, the old California capital of Monterey, is particularly charming.
